HOW TO PAINT AN OIL TURPENTINE

For a quick sketch, choose a scene with just a few simple shapes. That way, you can limit your color palette. For this sketch, I use soft blue for sky, the white of the clouds is from the paper.

A wash of Oxide Green was use to convey the shape of the meadow & trees in the distance. Naples Yellow to highlight the honeysuckle in the foreground. A thin wash of Ultra violet for the water. By mixing my existing green & purple, it gives me a deep green for the shadows. 

Charcoal pencil to define the fence.

An oil turpentine wash dries instantly on paper. I love to use pastel over oil on the paper.

MONET'S GIVERNY

My annual pilgrimage to Giverny... it's not so much a garden of flowers as of colors & tones. One hour from bustling Paris, Monet's famous house & garden sit quietly along the river valley & lush farmland. Early spring colors come from thousands of bulbs.

For a bustling city, Paris offers me a form of solitude...ah, the luxury of time & the infinite opportunity to ramble.

ROSE GARDEN

Time passes by so quickly, especially in a garden. I have to find time to pause & sketch in at least one rose garden before the season is over.

SNOWSCAPE

Despite all the development over the years, Greenwich remains very scenic. Nothing like a bit of snow to make the bare trees picturesque.
