THE BUSINESS OF ART

Gallery in Bridgehampton, LI
Window shopping on Main St, I came upon this sketch by Jane Freilicher. Best known for her monumental still lives, evocative cityscapes & sparkling landscapes of Long Island. Her little sketch cost over $4,000...I'm lucky if a few people get to see my sketch. It's a crazy business!

SUMMER COLORS OF MOHONK MT HOUSE

Another one from Mohonk Mountain House. The sketch always seems to come out better when I'm playing with paints outdoor on a fine day. I think our state of mind can influence our physical condition & our bodies can affect our spirit.

HOW TO PAINT AN OIL TURPENTINE

For a quick sketch, choose a scene with just a few simple shapes. That way, you can limit your color palette. For this sketch, I use soft blue for sky, the white of the clouds is from the paper.

A wash of Oxide Green was use to convey the shape of the meadow & trees in the distance. Naples Yellow to highlight the honeysuckle in the foreground. A thin wash of Ultra violet for the water. By mixing my existing green & purple, it gives me a deep green for the shadows.

Charcoal pencil to define the fence.

An oil turpentine wash dries instantly on paper. I love to use pastel over oil on the paper.

texture of this paper works well with this landscape sketch

LYME ART COLONY

Florene Griswold Museum sits by the bucolic Connecticut River. It's the famed home of the Lyme Art Colony. House & garden inspired a generation of artist.

I'm so familiar with the area, that finding a pretty spot by the water to paint was pretty easy.

CLOUD ABSTRACTION

oil turpentine sketch
Soaking up the November sun. Unusually mild for Thanksgiving Week. My love affair with the light & sky out my window.

WINTER BEACHWALK

The cleansing effect of the sea is good not only for the body but also for the soul… taking time out from the holiday music & rushing around.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Easy to start a painting, tough to finish one. To be an artist, we are curse with self critical eye. I've learn to lay my projects out in a open table. As long as it is out in the open, it will be done. If not this month, then, next month.

APRE LA PLUIE

I'm posting this, because it's that kind of a day. After all our rainy days, colors in the fields are amazingly intense everywhere.

IRIS PINKS

The morning fog transform the mood in the garden. When the sun comes out, this Iris & Rose combo will look totally different.

RAIN CLOUDS

Rubbed in this shade of blue & mauve to describe perfectly a menacing dark rain cloud. Well, thank goodness it's not snow clouds. Connecticut is still digging out from our major storm over the weekend.

STORMY CLOUDS

As much as I  love to paint details, I'm feeling abstract today ... just packed up some paints & head to the beach. It's always easy to see the abstract shapes and forms of the sky & water.

L I SOUND

Due to the chilly breeze from L.I. Sound, enormous serenity at Tod's Point. Not a soul or pet on the beach. I like this new white filbert from Blick Scholastic series. Just the right size for dabs of clouds & highlights for the wave. A regular 2B pencil works well over the oil sketch.
